The two become friends as Penn helps to clean Luce up. She kills Penn with a knife and attempts to do the same to Luce, but she is stopped in time by Daniel, Arriane and Gabbe. Later on in the story, Daniel and Luce take off to a hidden away lake, where they swim together. Arriane takes Luce under her wing, which agitates Cam. Isolated and haunted by strange visions, Luce begins to unravel the secrets of her past and discovers the two men are fallen angels, who she learns have loved her for centuries. The next day, Luce is late for her detention at the cemetery, annoying the rest of the group which consists of Arriane, Molly, Roland, and—much to Luce's surprise—Daniel. He leaves Luce at the rock, and Luce is confused when she thinks she sees a pair of faint wings on Daniel's back as he runs off.
